Odor Elimination from
Musical Instruments with Nok-Out
Question: Can
Odors and mold smells be safely removed from musical instruments?
Answer:
Yes. Nok-Out will eliminate any odor anywhere if it is allowed
to penetrate and locate all odor molecules. Nok-Out will also disinfect as it deodorizes.
DIRECTIONS:
- Nok-Out
is water based. With this in mind, certain precautions must
be taken to prevent water damage from occurring. This protocol
will help you to eliminate odors, and protect your valuable instrument.
- Remove
strings or separate parts of the instrument.
- Dip
a cloth into Nok-Out, and squeeze out much of the liquid.
Wipe the entire instrument with Nok-Out, paying especial attention
to frets, seams or any place where odors may penetrate.
Remembering that the sounding board (the body) is very thin wood,
do not saturate with Nok-Out, but wipe completely with a wet cloth,
and allow penetration for no more than 5 minutes. The same
procedure should be followed for metal musical instruments from
where odors/contamination seem to be coming.
- Air
dry as quickly as possible. Never place in direct sunlight,
but allow drying in a cool site. A ceiling fan or other
fan may help speed up the process.
- Spray
a fine mist of Nok-Out into the sound hole of the instrument.
A fine mist from an electric sprayer is best as this applicator
will allow Nok-Out to penetrate more easily and will not allow
too much moisture to invade. If this is not available, turn
the nozzle of the trigger spray to ‘fine’.
Be careful to reach the entire interior of the instrument.
Allow to penetrate for no more than 5 minutes. Dry Quickly.
(Nok-Out will always work if it reaches the SOURCE of the
odor. Odor molecules tend to drift into seams, cracks and
crevices and may be difficult to remove.)
- Odors
collect in music cases also.
To remedy this problem, spray the case inside and outside, addressing
the seams, holes, stitching, etc. If the interior cloth
can be removed, do so, and spray the case inside as well.
If you cannot remove the lining, spray/saturate, and allow to
penetrate for up to 5 minutes. Dry quickly. Do
not put a cleaned, odor free instrument back into the case
until it is also treated with Nok-Out.
- Nok-Out
will eliminate topical odors on contact. Underlying or embedded
odors may not be reached on the first application. After
10-24 hours, you may note the bad smell again, as these odors
leach to the surface. At which time, reduce Nok-Out by 50%
with water, and spray as directed in steps 2, 3, 4, 5. Always
dry completely. Remember that the offending odors were laid
down one layer at a time, and may need to be removed slowly and
methodically. Removing them is a process…one layer
at a time!
